## MATHS

At Abbey Meads, we encourage children to have a positive attitude to Mathematics and to gain a deeper understanding of Mathematical concepts through a process of enquiry, reasoning and problem solving. We enforce confidence in Mathematics, where children can express ideas fluently and talk about the subject using mathematical language.

Ways we teach children to learn mathematical skills:

• Maths is taught daily throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

• We embed the core skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and realise the importance and application of number in an everyday real life context.

• We use practical apparatus and resources in our Maths teaching.

• We promote the importance of learning the multiplication tables and their related division facts through fun lessons and ‘Time Tables Rock Stars’, celebrating individual achievements along the way.

• We develop an understanding of shape, data and measures through practical creative lessons which are often cross-curricular and encourage pupil led investigations.

Our teaching of Mathematics aims to equip children with the necessary numeracy skills to allow them to use different methods and strategies in everyday life, as they continue on their learning journeys.

Video Support

To support the use of Maths methods at home, we have produced these short videos of the commonly used methods in school.

We start to use some of these methods in Year 3 (such as the expanded method for addition and subtraction) and these are then built upon in Year 4, 5 and 6 (moving on to the compact methods for both of these and then applying them to more complex problems). There are also methods for multiplication and division. We start multiplication with the grid method towards the end of Year 3 and this often carries through to Year 4. By Year 5 the children are expected to use expanded multiplication and eventually the compact method. Division is similar with the children being introduced to chunking towards the end of Year 3 through to Year 4, before moving onto the Bus Stop Method (called this because it looks like a bus stop) by Year 5/6.
